Financial aid applications are available at the time of application. Students with special financial concerns or with a change in financial circumstances are encouraged to contact the Executive Assistant to the Dean at 860-509-9553 for more information about applying for financial aid.
Hartford Seminary currently offers two types of financial assistance to students: need-based aid and merit-based scholarships.
Need-based Aid: Limited financial aid is available to matriculated students enrolled in Hartford Seminary M.A., D.Min., and Islamic Chaplaincy degree programs. Eligible students may receive tuition aid up to 60% of annual course tuition. However, please note that the amount of financial aid available for distribution varies each year. The deadline for first round consideration for need-based financial aid for the academic year, which begins with the fall semester, is June 1. Financial aid applications received after June 1 will be considered if funds are available. Students who are admitted to degree programs mid-year will be given priority for the remaining funds. Students are required to reapply for financial aid each year. Students are not guaranteed financial aid even if they received aid the previous year, and must maintain better than a B- grade point average to maintain eligibility. Students may also be eligible for privately funded student loan programs. Merit scholarships: Students applying for admission to the M.A. may submit applications for merit-based awards. Merit scholarships recognize a student’s academic aptitude and potential. Extracurricular activities, publications and other awards/honors also will be considered when determining a student’s eligibility for a merit award. Only incoming M.A. program students who have a 3.5 grade point average (or above) or its equivalent at previous academic institutions are eligible for merit awards. Priority consideration will be given to applicants who submit their applications by the 1st of February prior to the start of any given academic year in September. Awards are intended to cover the duration of a student’s study, but will not exceed three years or 48 credit hours (whichever comes first). In order to keep scholarships, students must maintain better than a 3.5 grade point average. Special Students, D.Min. students, Ph.D. students, Graduate Certificate Program students, and Auditors are not eligible for merit scholarships.
Current students and new program applicants may obtain statements of the financial aid policies and an application form from the Student Forms Center at 77 Sherman Street or from the online Student Forms Center accessible through the Seminary’s website.
Federal Stafford Loans: (Program Pending Approval-Start Date To Be Announced)
Domestic matriculated students in good academic standing who are enrolled in M.A.degree program may also apply for Federal Stafford Loans through the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program. In order to be eligible for Federal Stafford Loans students must be registered for at least 6 credits per semester the loans are requested. Auditors are not eligible for Stafford Loans. The following forms must be completed and received by the Financial Aid Office prior to any loans being awarded:

- Hartford Seminary Financial Aid Application
- 2008 Federal Income Tax Return
Priority date for Need Based Financial Aid and Federal Stafford Loans is June 1 for the academic year that begins with the fall semester. Need-based Financial Aid will be awarded based on availability while Federal Stafford Loans can be awarded anytime.
