October 19 Great Awakening Bus Tour. (click link to see photos & more info about this event)
Our anniversary week began by honoring our roots in the Congregational tradition. First Church, Simsbury joined with us to present a bus tour of historically significant sites, with our tour guide Ken Minkema, Director of the Jonathan Edwards Center at Yale School of Divinity. A special highlight of the tour was a re-enactment of Rev. Jonathan Edwards’ famous sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" by one of Hartford Seminary's alumni. The tour concluded with tea time at Hartford Seminary.

Our week continued with Voices of Faithful Living, a daily reflection by visiting Jewish, Christian and Muslim leaders, scholars, and theologians. Featured guests: Rabbi Stephen Fuchs, Rev. Dr. Ralph Ahlberg, `59, `96, Sister Nurah Jeter Amat’ullah,`03, Rev. William Inderstrodt, `52, Rev. Dr. James Deotis Roberts, `51, `52.

One event during the week was a lunch for alumni/ae at the former home of the Seminary across the street, which now houses the University of Connecticut School of Law.

In the evening on Friday, October 24, the Seminary presented a Distinguished Alumnus Award to the Rev. Dr. James Deotis Roberts, ’51, ’52, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to theology.  Dr. Roberts is a pioneer in black liberation theology and author of the book Bonheoffer and King:  Speaking Truth to Power, and his recent biography, Seasons of Change. The award was presented during a dinner at which the alumni/ae viewed a 1960s television interview with then President James Gettemy about the Seminary and a video that captures the spirit of the Seminary today, titled “A Place for Peace.”

On Monday evening the work of the Macdonald Center for the Study of Islam and Christian- Muslim Relations was featured as we introduced and welcomed our two new faculty members to the Center, Mahmoud Ayoub and Yahya Michot. Dr. Ayoub presented a lecture entitled Towards a Framework for Interfaith Dialogue: Globalism or Pluralism, followed by Dr. Michot speaking on the topic An Islamic “theology”? Why?

Donor Appreciation Reception. (click link to see photos & more info about this event) The evening ended with a reception honoring the contributions of outgoing Center Director and alumna Dr. Jane Smith and former trustee Ali Antar.

October 21 Meet the Author.(click link to see photos & more info about this event)
Author Brent Bill visited the Seminary Tuesday evening for a reading and signing of his new book: Sacred Compass: the Path of Spiritual Discernment. Attendees were able to meet and interact with the author at the reception that followed the reading.

October 22 Jazz in the Stacks.(click link to see photos & more info about this event)
Wednesday evening featured Jazz in the Stacks. Attendees mixed and mingled to music while they discovered and discussed theintriguing and unusual in an exhibit of artifacts from our archives. Refurbished portraits of prominent leaders from the Seminary's past were on exhibit in our Library.

October 23 President’s Panel.(click link to see photos & more info about this event)
Heidi Hadsell, President, presented a talk entitled The Nature of Theological Education: Past, Present and Future on Thursday evening. During this panel presentation, we were honored by the presence of our past presidents, Barbara Brown Zikmund, Michael R. Rion, Jackson W. Carroll, and James N. Gettemy, for a discussion on "then, now and next: how theological education addresses the needs and issues of our time." The discussion continued over desserts following the panel presentation.

October 24 and Saturday, October 25 Hartford Seminary Sampler.(click link to see photos & more info about this event)
The Hartford Seminary Sampler was a two-day opportunity to explore the range of topics and expertise of the Seminary. Workshops, lectures, and tours, which were open to the public, filled both Friday and Saturday afternoons along with special gatherings for our alumni/ae and donors.

Guests were invited to sample a lecture, walk a labyrinth, or let the spirit move them in a doll-making workshop. Interaction with our faculty followed presentations on such topics as Creation, Interfaith Dialogue, Lessons from Megachurches, Islam in America, and many others.

We were honored to present Hartford Seminary Distinguished AlumnusThe Rev. Dr. James Deotis Roberts `51,’52, as a featured speaker. Author of the book, Bonhoeffer and King: Speaking Truth to Power, Dr. Roberts is, and has long been, one of the foremost American voices in Black Liberation Theology.

A special Global Village Gala was held on Saturday evening, to honor the life and work of retiring Professor and former Dean Worth Loomis, a mainstay in the Hartford business community, and raise money for student scholarships. The Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company sponsored the dinner.

October 26 An Interfaith Service of Celebration.(click link to see photos & more info about this event)
As a fitting finale for this historic week, an "Interfaith Service of Celebration" was held at the Immanuel Congregational Church,Woodland Street, Hartford in its magnificent sanctuary. Voices from Muslim, Christian and Jewish traditions provided inspiration as we gathered together for this final offering of the 175th Anniversary Week, an uplifting and memorable experience that sent us all forward with renewed courage and commitment.

These events marked just the beginning of our year long Anniversary Celebration. Help us celebrate the year by coming out to future events to interact with our world-class faculty dedicated to preparing peacemakers and promoting vital faith communities, explore new ways to meet the needs of our pluralistic, multi-faith world, and join the conversation.
