SCOTT
THUMMA
In
undergraduate school I was determined to pursue a Ph.D. in
psychology of religion, thinking at the time that if I could
understand the human psyche I would be better able to grasp the
dynamics of religious life.
Then I read Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann’s The
Social Construction of Reality: A Treatise in the Sociology of
Knowledge.
Reading this book was a moment of conversion for me.
Through it I came to realize that human nature, as well as
the expression of religion, is far more conditioned by our social
context than by our individual personality dynamics.
My encounter with this book set me off on a new and richer
path in the study of religious life.
